ReConnect Rondo releases Position Paper regarding Rethinking I-94 alternatives
Saint Paul, Minn—On June 14, 2024, ReConnect Rondo (RCR), a community-driven organization dedicated to preserving and revitalizing the historic Rondo neighborhood, submitted an official position paper to the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) regarding the Rethinking I-94 alternatives. Supported by the Rondo Roundtable, the paper aims to provide input on the overall process that includes the Rondo community’s needs and allows for consideration of infrastructure solutions to reestablish connectivity and directly address the community’s social, economic, and environmental needs.
“RCR believes that the Rethinking I-94 project has a unique opportunity to be responsive to the community of Rondo and others negatively impacted by the construction of I-94. The selection of the alternatives should reflect MnDOT’s longstanding commitment to address past harms and do no further damage”, said Keith Baker, Executive Director of ReConnect Rondo
The following are highlights from the paper:
- Evaluation of At-Grade Alternatives
ReConnect Rondo seeks additional data on At-Grade Alternatives A & B to assess traffic impacts and overall feasibility in conjunction with the District and land bridge developments.
- Expanded Freeway Alternatives for I-94
In February 2021, ReConnect Rondo signed as a signatory for the City of Saint Paul resolution (RES 21-164), strongly opposing any lane expansion within the corridor.
- Livability Framework Integration
RCR requests MnDOT incorporate the Livability Framework into the next phase of the environmental assessment and Section 106 process, promoting equity and restoration.
